Life is good.

To make a LONG story SHORT: Jocelyn had a pyloromyotomy on Tuesday to repair pyloric stenosis - the cause of her vomiting. Basically, the muscle that lets food out of her stomach got too big and wouldn't let any food into her intestines. So she had a little surgery to cut the muscle. After four long days, we are back at home and she is doing great. The GOOD news - Jocelyn is going to stop vomiting, we are going to be doing a lot less laundry these days, and she is going to gain a lot more weight. I am excited because now we can go to church and out in public without me having an anxiety attack thinking about her puking on someone. Also, I was able to store up 100 ounces of breast milk - we are going to have to buy a new freezer soon! Giving birth and going through this experience have made me really appreciate advances in modern medicine - especially imaging (I heart ultrasounds!) and surgery. It is crazy to think that in pioneer days, either I or litle J would have died in childbirth from placenta previa or she would have died from pyloric stenosis. The 21st century is great. Life couldn't be better.

*I checked up some stats on pyloric stenosis. It is 5 times more common in males. The cause is not exactly understood, but there is a genetic component. Trent and I have a 6.5% chance of having another child affected and Jocelyn has a 24.4% chance that one of her children will be affected. No one in either of our families has had this, that we know of. Will Ferrell had pyloric stenosis and you can see his scar in his shirtless scenes.

I had no idea that Jocelyn had surgery. If you need anything please let us know. I'm so glad that things went well and there will be no more vomiting. I'm jealous that you have that much breast milk stored. I can't seem to keep up with how much Landon is eating.

Wow! What a story! That must have been hard for you guys. I didn't know that she was having surgery either. We are here to help too!

I'm so glad things will be getting better for her and you. Is that an outpatient procedure?

Here, I thought you were just being an over-sensitive new mother! But your intuition was totally right, and something was not normal. Thank goodness you got it checked and everything went well with the surgery! I am sorry, I was so stupid to try to convince you that it was nothing. Give me a call so we can hang out when you are up to it!

No, not an outpatient procedure. She had to have an IV to rehydrate her and get her elecrolytes back in order. Also, an NG tube to drain her stomach. Poor thing was probably starving but she's a trooper.

Kerri - no worries, I feel like the stupid one. At first I thought I was just being a hypochondriacal med student, but looking back I should have been a more pushy mother. It was a learning experience.

Hey Angela, Heather gave me your blog address, very cute and informative, it was nice to be able to read about how you are both doing! I didn't even know you had a baby! Congrats, it is wonderful isn't it! We have another one on the way in March. Did you have placenta previa the whole time? We have a blog page too... toddandlauralayton.blogspot.com
